Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

How Cloud Computing Can Jump Start Your Recession Proof IT Career
Come to San Jose November 20 and find out first-hand how the Cloud can turn fixed costs into variable costs

By: Cloud News Desk
Nov. 10, 2008 06:05 AM

Many already realize that the economic downturn increases the usefulness of Cloud Computing. But do you? Rather than writing that $2M check for your data center hardware refresh, wouldn't you rather manage your infrastructure as a service? Those attending SYS-CON's pioneering "Cloud Computing Bootcamp" (www.cloudbootcamp.sys-con.com) on November 20 at The Fairmont Hotel will learn first-hand how moving part of their infrastructure to the cloud can turn capital expenditure (or fixed costs) into operational expenditure (or variable costs). That's how to beat a recession!

Being held for the first time at The Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, CA, on November 20, 2008, the free Cloud Computing Bootcamp will show you how to take advantage of the cloud.

Cloud computing is an opportunity for businesses to implement low-cost, low-power and high-efficiency systems to deliver scalable infrastructure. But moving to a cloud infrastructure is not necessarily as nice and clean as the providers would want you to think. With cloud infrastructures problems don't magically go away; they just shift: you don't have scalability or storage problems any more, but you need to constantly monitor the cloud and your application in it.

Led by Alan Williamson, the Cloud Computing Bootcamp will illustrate all the major players and provide a hands-on program with configuration samples, live demos and working setups you can further adapt and play with.

Alan Williamson, founder of Blog-City.com, is a Sun Java Champion and creator of OpenBlueDragon (an open source Java CFML runtime engine). He is currently engaged with a number of startups providing technology and expertise. He has worked with SpikeSource for nearly three years as technical evangelist and architect in SpikeLabs. He has assisted VCs in preparing technical overview and due diligence, was editor-in-chief of Java Developer's Journal, founding editor of LinuxWorld Magazine, and has more than 16 years of experience in the world of software development.

Join Alan Williamson and your fellow attendees at the Cloud Computing Bootcamp on November 20, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. We'll see you in San Jose, California!

Cloud Computing Bootcamp is timed to coincide with SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Conference & Expo (19-21 November, 2008), also being held at The Fairmont Hotel, San Jose, CA.

Everything you need to know about Cloud Computing but were too scared to ask

So you have a room full of servers that on the whole are sitting doing very little work. You've heard all about this "cloud" stuff, but you are unsure how to apply your current knowledge and thinking to this new virtualised world.

Fear not, this bootcamp will illustrate all the major players with real hands-on experience. You will see how each of the players will help you transistion from costly, physical based services to utilising ondemand processing.

This bootcamp assumes you are looking to run a service with as close to 100% as possible with as much scalability as possible then this is the day for you.

This will be a live hands-on bootcamp, with configuration samples, live demos and working setups you can further adapt and play with.

The morning will look at some of the major players and what services they have to offer and how you get access to them. The afternoon will be putting it all together and looking at how you really put them to work either as an individual service or as a series of clouds.

Q&A encouraged throughout!
