BroadMotion's JPEG2000 Surpasses 75 MB/s Benchmark
Deployed on a Re-Programmable TI TMS320DM64x(TM) DSP and Altera Cyclone(TM) II, BroadMotion's JPEG2000 IP Core Surpasses a 75 MB

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- BroadMotion today announced new performance benchmarks for its JPEG2000 compression/decompression (codec) technology for an embedded co-processing platform that combines a Texas Instruments (TI) TMS320C64x(TM) digital signal processor (DSP) or TMS320DM64x(TM) DSP-based digital media processor with an Altera Cyclone(TM) II FPGA. The new platform achieves a throughput of 75 megabytes per second (MB/s).

At these new benchmarks, BroadMotion's codec can encode high definition (HD) video in real time with a single IP core. For surveillance applications, it can encode 6 simultaneous channels of 8-bit color D1 video (720x480) at 20 frames per second (fps). At VGA (640x480) resolution it can be increased to 8 simultaneous channels. Full performance metrics are published at the BroadMotion web site at http://www.broadmotion.com/ . The new codec will ship to customers in the first quarter of 2007.

"Our recent algorithm optimizations enable us to exceed the performance standards found in the current ASIC-based solutions for JPEG2000," said Jeff Brooks, president of BroadMotion. "Our embedded codec provides a hardware engineer with the highest throughput performance available from a single IP core while simultaneously allowing them to deploy a re-programmable embedded solution. This flexibility enables them to upgrade the JPEG2000 technology in the field, increasing functionality and performance as new versions become available. Given our history of consistent performance upgrades, this assures that the fastest JPEG2000 encoding can be dynamically delivered to the field."

"BroadMotion continues to advance and optimize its JPEG2000 technology for our Cyclone II FPGA family," said Brian Jentz, senior manager for Altera's Broadcast and Consumer Business Unit. "We see increasing adoption for JPEG2000 in the digital cinema and high definition (HD) broadcast markets. The ever-increasing performance and quality requirements for these applications make re-programmable FPGAs an ideal architecture choice."

Prodrive, a European company that develops and produces embedded image processing products and solutions, recently implemented BroadMotion's JPEG2000 codec on a TI DSP and Altera FPGA co-processing architecture. "This embedded design gave us the most flexibility moving forward," says Dion Cornelissen, technology manager for the Digital Design Group at Prodrive. "The BroadMotion JPEG2000 encoder is an optimized, high performance IP core and because we selected this architecture, we can now deploy their new performance upgrades to the field, thus improving our products."

"We have focused our recent development efforts for the digital cinema and high definition video broadcast markets," said Chris Komnick, vice president of business development for BroadMotion. "These new performance benchmarks for a single IP core enable our licensees to build flexible embedded solutions that can meet the throughput required for cinema quality production. It also creates new consumer-based opportunities, including the compression and wireless distribution of high definition video within the home."

JPEG2000 is the next-generation International Organization for Standardization (ISO) still image and video compression standard. In July 2005, it was adopted by the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) as the format for the storage and distribution of motion pictures. JPEG2000 addresses several weaknesses inherent in existing video formats such as improved visual fidelity at high compression rates, low latency, increased error resiliency in wireless network environments and multi-resolution decoding from a single source file. JPEG2000 is currently being deployed in digital cinema, HD broadcast production, wireless transport of in-home entertainment and video surveillance applications.
