MILPITAS, Calif., Aug. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Corporation today announced that it has joined The Green Grid, a non-profit consortium of information technology companies and professionals seeking to lower the overall consumption of power in data centers around the globe.
Dr. Claudine Simson, executive vice president and chief technology officer of LSI, said, "Power consumption is becoming a front-burner concern among IT managers. Not only have issues such as global warming and rising costs pushed energy to center stage, but industry analysts have predicted that many data centers soon will lack sufficient energy capacity to power and cool the latest high-density computer equipment. As the industry's only silicon-to-systems storage provider, LSI has made energy efficiency a focus of its R&D efforts. We are delighted to be collaborating with other industry leaders to promote the greening of the data center."
LSI is pursuing reduced power consumption across a broad front in data storage. Strategies for reducing power consumption start at the system level and include methods to spin down inactive hard disk drives, develop solid-state drives, and virtualize storage. At the component level, the company's newest generation of read channel, PHY and pre-amplifier chips consume significantly less power than the previous generation.
LSI recently published its first White Paper on the subject of energy efficiency in the data center. The paper, entitled "Performance Impact on Energy Efficiency", discusses the importance of evaluating the performance efficiency of external storage systems so that data centers can meet the organization's Service Level Agreements with fewer disk drives. The White Paper is available for downloading from the LSI website at http://www.lsi.com/powerconsumption.
Founded in February of this year, The Green Grid is chartered to develop meaningful, platform-neutral standards, measurement methods, processes and new technologies to improve energy efficient performance of global data centers.
