State Treasurer Lockyer Talks With TOWN HALL About the Greening of California

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 01/17/08 -- The Honorable Bill Lockyer, Treasurer, State of
California, will deliver his address "California: Greening the Golden
State" on January 31, 2008 at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel. Angelenos may
ask Lockyer if green innovations will boost the state's economy.
On going "green" long-term Lockyer said, "If someone told me I could save
$1,000 every year on my utility bills if I spent $500 now to make my home
more energy efficient, I'd jump at the chance. I think most homeowners
would... We need to move away from the first-year fiscal mentality to more
of a life-cycle approach. That's another way of saying we need to think
long-term."
Lockyer was elected state Treasurer on November 7, 2006. From 1999-2006, he
served as Attorney General and is currently California's longest serving
state official. He served for 25 years in the state legislature where he
held the position of Speaker pro-Tempore.
According to Lockyer, studies indicate that the state could earn as much as
$863 million in energy savings for each $500 million spent to make its
buildings more efficient. "If the public sector doesn't make an adequate
effort to meet those goals, then the burden is greater on the private
sector."
Throughout its 70-year history, TOWN HALL has hosted discussions with state
elected officials. In 2006, Senator Dianne Feinstein delivered her address
"Global Warming: A Time to Act." In 2007, Senator Barbara Boxer and State
Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jack O'Connell spoke with TOWN HALL.
