Open Source Oracle Monitoring - Monocle
Open Source Oracle Monitoring - Monocle
Feb. 15, 2008 06:37 PM

SEATTLE, WA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 02/15/08 -- Blue Gecko launched its first open source product focusing on a core competency Oracle database monitoring.

When Blue Gecko began, they relied heavily on free, open-source software because startups need to conserve cash, and as database administrators they found most commercial solutions too generic and too difficult to adapt to specific customer monitoring challenges. The choice to use Nagios as a monitoring framework was partly because it was freely available, but also because the monitoring framework was so technology agnostic: "We could write a plug-in to do anything we wanted and we could monitor anything in a nice, clean, consistent manner," said founder Chuck Edwards.

Blue Gecko used the early versions of this product in their Oracle hosting practice and in the monitoring of many remote Oracle administration clients. Eventually, a product was identified and defined. The decision to publish Monocle under GPLv2 evolved out of the early use of open-sourced software. "Open-source software allowed us to get started rapidly and inexpensively. We wanted to give back to that community," said Edwards.

Blue Gecko clients have been receiving the rewards of well-monitored databases for years. Neil Morgan, Director Online Systems at WWF International, said, "With Blue Gecko and Monocle watching our databases, I don't have to think about them. They identify potential problems in our databases before we do and more importantly before our end users do." WWF-World Wide Fund For Nature (also known as World Wildlife Fund) is a long-standing database-hosting customer with Blue Gecko.

Monocle is a monitoring system that can be integrated with multiple alerting mechanisms by Blue Gecko or on-site staff. It is self-contained code running within an Oracle database. These monitors look for and report on various issues that exist in the monitored database. In the first release there is an included Nagios plug-in.

Blue Gecko provides database administration support services for Oracle and MySQL. The Blue Gecko team proactively monitors, administers, and tunes Oracle and MySQL Server database environments, either on our own Database Hosting Services platform, or at our Client's site via Remote DBA Services.
