Seattle’s Top Entrepreneurs Band Together To Invest In Local Startups
Seattle has has a heck of a tech scene, but isn’t so big that the community breaks down into cliques and haters as Silicon Valley does in the boom times. Maybe that’s why I spend so much time up here. Like other tech hubs, successful Seattle entrepreneurs tend to become angel investors and help the next crop of companies come of age. An example: Pressplane, which recently announced a long list of Seattle angels. Now those angels are getting a little more organized by investing in the

Breaking Brooks’s Law
Fred Brooks’s law of ‘adding manpower to a late software project makes it later‘ is one most of us have tried to prove wrong…….and failed! I was at Agile 2008 and saw an interesting session, “Breaking Brooks’s Law” from Menlo Innovations, a Michigan based Java development company. They claimed to disprove this law and demonstrated their working environment and techniques that allowed them to do so. Although the presentation was only 45 minutes, we

Samsung has crappy design — so why is it always an exemplar?
I’m reading Do You Matter? How Great Design Will Make People Love Your Company. In theme and topic, it’s *very* similar to Subject to Change, which mostly makes me grateful that we published first. We also don’t reference Apple *nearly* as much as this book does, though I guess it may be excusable, because one of its authors, Rob Brunner, worked there (though, he worked there when Jobs wasn’t there, so take that as you will). Anyway, I’m compelled to blog because w

Mashups for the People. You Betcha!
I laughed when I heard Sarah Palin say in last week's debate: “...and I may not answer the questions that either the moderator or you want to hear, but I'm going to talk straight to the American people and let them know my track record also” (this is straight from the CNN transcript). I laughed because it’s such overt “spin” to say you’re not going to answer what the moderator wants to hear. And, incidentally, it's exactly what the moderator wants to hear. But that’s beside the po

Advice for Chris Messina
If you're interested in how formats and protocols evolve on the web, you might want to listen to Steve Gillmor's interview of Chris Messina on yesterday's Gillmor Gang. I used to do roughly what Chris does, but I got tired of all the kitchen sinks being thrown at me because of my success from people who work at big tech companies. They have all kinds of techniques for thwarting success, but one simple motive, as I've come to understand it. All big tech companies are basically the same inside, t

… was the catchy snappy hip punchy title of our contribution to this year’s BPMI (aka OMG) Think Tank 2008’s RoundTable sessions. Running Toronto Marathon - 9/28/2008
A couple of years ago my friend Kaushal Vyas blogged about his first marathon experience. His blog entry started with some quotes from Lance Armstrong on his first marathon: “the hardest physical thing I have ever done. Even the worst days in the tours, nothing was as hard as that and nothing left me feeling the way I feel now in terms of sheer fatigue and soreness. I think I bit off more than I could chew, I thought the marathon would be easier…”. It didn’t resonate with me at t

The October edition of the Harvard Business Journal has a contributed article by Intuit co-founder Scott Cooke on how to build your business using communities.
